Music (Component of ARTS 1) – Sec 1

In Secondary 1, students will experience music in the following ways:

• • • By learning the fundamentals of playing a concert band instrument
    • Through the development of musical literacy
    • By developing a disciplined approach to individual practice
    • By following a clear structure for learning in a classroom (band)
      environment
    • Through the exploration of sound production and the relationship
    • between silence and sound

Music – Sec 2 – 3

In Secondary 2 & 3, students will experience music in the following ways:

• • • By learning the fundamentals of playing a concert band instrument

    • Through the exploration of sound production and the relationship

Music – Optional – Sec 4 – 5

Students will be given access to a band instrument free of charge. Students are expected to practise their chosen instrument daily for 20 minutes.

Music – Sound Engineering – Science Stream – Sec 5

This project-based course will explore the creation and the recreation of sound. Students will learn about live and studio recordings and how to manipulate sound through equalization, compression, reverberation and pan. Using software and hardware provided by the school, along with their own acoustic instruments and digitally sequenced sounds, students will make multi-track audio creations along with sound for video. In order to gain musical literacy, students will explore various elements of musical analysis that will include: form, style, structure, tonality and meter. Students will explore their own musicality through song creation and performance.
