L'Acad\u00e9mie Royal West est l'une des \u00e9coles secondaires publiques les plus prestigieuses de Montr\u00e9al, forte d'une longue tradition remarquable. \u00c0 l'occasion du 70e anniversaire de l'\u00e9cole, il est tout \u00e0 fait appropri\u00e9 de revenir sur une partie de cette histoire.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

La premi\u00e8re structure construite sur le terrain o\u00f9 se trouve aujourd'hui l'Acad\u00e9mie Royal West \u00e9tait en fait une \u00e9glise, la premi\u00e8re \u00e9glise anglicane Saint Philips, construite en 1891. Cette \u00e9glise servait d'\u00e9cole \u00e0 de nombreux enfants qui vivaient \u00e0 proximit\u00e9. Le b\u00e2timent est rapidement devenu beaucoup trop \u00e9troit, ce qui a conduit \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de l'\u00e9cole Aberdeen.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00c9cole Aberdeen<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Achev\u00e9e en 1894 et financ\u00e9e par une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de pr\u00eat canadienne-fran\u00e7aise, l'\u00e9cole pouvait accueillir 200 \u00e9l\u00e8ves. Le deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9tage a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 pour un certain nombre de fonctions sociales jusqu'en 1910, date de la construction de l'h\u00f4tel de ville. Par la suite, des salles de classe ont \u00e9t\u00e9 am\u00e9nag\u00e9es \u00e0 cet \u00e9tage. En 1913, la derni\u00e8re aile de l'\u00e9cole a \u00e9t\u00e9 reli\u00e9e au b\u00e2timent et un gymnase fut construit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nouvelle \u00e9cole Montreal West High School<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

En 1921, elle devient l'\u00e9cole Montreal West High School. La population de l'\u00e9cole augmente consid\u00e9rablement au cours des ann\u00e9es 1930, \u00e0 un point tel que l'ancienne \u00e9cole n'est plus ad\u00e9quate. C'est ainsi qu'en 1931, l'\u00e9cole Montreal West High School est d\u00e9molie et ses \u00e9l\u00e8ves temporairement relog\u00e9s. Une nouvelle \u00e9cole secondaire am\u00e9lior\u00e9e, connue sous l'appellation nouvelle \u00e9cole Montreal West High School, est construite \u00e0 sa place.<\/p>

La nouvelle \u00e9cole Montreal West High School \u00e9tait \u00e0 la pointe du progr\u00e8s pour l'\u00e9poque. Une architecture inhabituelle mais superbe, des mat\u00e9riaux de construction durables, une d\u00e9coration int\u00e9rieure magnifique, des salles de classe et des laboratoires bien \u00e9quip\u00e9s et un grand et splendide gymnase ne sont que quelques-unes des nombreuses caract\u00e9ristiques de la nouvelle \u00e9cole. En 1951 et 1959, un certain nombre d'agrandissements se greffent \u00e0 l'\u00e9cole Montreal West High School. Ces agrandissements, d\u00e9sign\u00e9es aujourd'hui comme \u00e9tant l'aile ouest de l'\u00e9cole, deviendront l'\u00e9cole Montreal West Elementary School.<\/p>

Malheureusement, l'\u00e9cole primaire a \u00e9t\u00e9 ferm\u00e9e en 1980 en raison de la baisse des effectifs et a \u00e9t\u00e9 fusionn\u00e9e pour devenir l'\u00e9cole Royal Vale. Plus tard, en 1982, Royal Vale a \u00e9galement d\u00fb fermer ses portes devant la diminution des inscriptions. Elle a rouvert en 1983 sous le nom actuel d'Acad\u00e9mie Royal West issu de la fusion de l'\u00e9cole Royal Vale (\"Royal\") et de l'\u00e9cole Montreal West School (\"West\").<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

L'\u00e9mergence de l'Acad\u00e9mie Royal West en 1983 constitue la derni\u00e8re m\u00e9tamorphose subie par l'\u00e9cole au cours de ses 70 ans d'existence. Au cours des 20 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, l'\u00e9cole a jou\u00e9 le r\u00f4le d'\u00e9cole alternative pour les \u00e9l\u00e8ves tr\u00e8s motiv\u00e9s. L'\u00e9cole compte actuellement un peu plus de 850 \u00e9l\u00e8ves de la 1re \u00e0 la 5e secondaire, dont plusieurs viennent d'aussi loin que Ch\u00e2teauguay et Brossard.<\/p>

Royal West continue d'occuper la partie centrale d'origine de l'\u00e9cole ainsi que l'aile ouest utilis\u00e9e dans le pass\u00e9 par les \u00e9coles primaires. Des plans sont rapidement \u00e9labor\u00e9s pour une modification importante de la structure actuelle de l'\u00e9cole. Il s'agirait notamment d'ajouter et de modifier les deux gymnases, l'auditorium et l'actuelle biblioth\u00e8que.
